Obviously, the earthquake was an artificial earthquake. The earthquake occurred at the last minute at noon on September 1, 1923. The city was awaiting the 'don' , the 'bang' of the cannon which since October 22, 1871 had been fired at noon every day in the palace plaza. But to tell the truth, the firing of the cannon celebrated Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite.
Alfred Nobel was Japanese. The Japanese government started the firing on October 22, 1871, which was September 9, 1871 in the Japanese calendar. Alfred Nobel was born on September 9, 1833 in the Japanese calendar, too.
Just after the earthquake, mass killings of Koreans were carried out in Tokyo. But the brutal incidents were never reported because of the government's censorship. However, the government lifted the censorship on October 21, 1923, which was the 90th anniversary of Nobel's birth (October 21, 1833).
US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Cyrus Woods presented his credentials to the Japanese emperor on July 21, 1923. During his time in Japan, he organized the American relief effort in response to the earthquake. However, the earthquake occurred on September 1, 1923, which was July 21, 1923 in the Japanese calendar.
