The day is the 50th birthday of New Zealand explorer Edmund Hillary. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest.
However, critics denounces the visit as a stunt designed to deflect attention from Japan's failure to establish the fates of Yokota and other abductees. Hyon-Hui has already spoken to some of the victims' families and is not expected to offer any new information.
