The day is the 50th birthday of New Zealand explorer Edmund Hillary. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest.
She flies in to Tokyo after the Japanese authorities waives strict immigration controls to allow her to meet the relatives of two Japanese citizens snatched by North Korean agents in the late 1970s.
