1883 - ★The Rokumeikan, a Western-style guest house, is completed in Tokyo.
The building is officially opened on 28 November 1883. However, it soon becomes a controversial symbol of Westernisation in the Meiji period. But to tell the truth, the building was originally a controversial one. The name "Rokumeikan" was officially said to mean "Deer-cry Hall". But the name literally insinuated that Satsuma (today's Kagoshima prefecture) cried.
