1949 - ◆(death) Sadanori Shimoyama, first president of Japanese National Railways.
Sadanori Shimoyama, bureaucrat of Ministry of Transport (former Ministry of Railways), is appointed the first president of JNR when it is established on June 1, 1949. Under the Dodge Line policy of the government, Shimoyama is responsible for drastic personnel cutbacks of JNR, as a part of which on July 4, 1949 he releases a list of about 30,000 employees to be fired.
But he disappears the next day and his body is found beside the railroad tracks on July 6. However, the cause of his death remains mysterious and controversial.
