August 12, 1852 - ◆A Russian expedition arrives in Nagasaki, Japan.
Nicholas I sends Yevfimy Putyatin to Japan in this expedition for trade negotiations. Putyatin leads a squadron of four ships including the Russian frigate Pallada. They arrive in Nagasaki on this day.

August 12, 1958 - ★All Nippon Airways Flight 25 crashes off the coast of Shimoda.
The cause of the accident was unable to clarify.

August 4, 1975 - ★"Chopsticks Day" is established in Japan.

August 4, 1975 - ★AIA Building hostage crisis takes place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Japanese Red Army takes more than 50 hostages at the AIA Building housing several embassies in Kuala Lumpur. The hostages include the U.S. consul and the Swedish charge d’affaires. The gunmen win the release of five imprisoned comrades and fly with them to Libya.

August 13, 1985 - ◆The Sanko Steamship Company declares bankruptcy.
The Sanko Steamship Company was founded in 1934. Its operating area was the western Pacific Ocean around Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. Its aggressive business expansion in the 1960s made the company one of the largest shipping companies in the world.
Although the bankruptcy was the largest at taht time in Japan, media coverage was small due to a devastating airplane crash accident which had occurred the previous day on August 12, 1985.
Toshio Komoto, the former president of the company and its largest stockholder, resigned from the cabinet the same day.
The day was the 300th anniversary of the first edict to protect animals (August 13, 1685).
