1895 - ◆The Treaty of Shimonoseki is signed between China and Japan.

This marks the end of the first Sino-Japanese War, and the defeated Qing Empire is forced to renounce its claims on Korea and to concede the southern portion of Fengtien province, Taiwan, and the Pescadores Islands to Japan.

1970 - ★The ill-fated Apollo 13 spacecraft returns to Earth safely.

Apollo 13 is launched on April 11 at 13:13. But oxygen tank No. 2 blows up in the spacecraft on April 13 and the landing mission is aborted. However, it touches down safely in the Pacific Ocean. The mission is called "a successful failure".

※ This mission was probably a pun on the ominous number 13. And April 17 was chosen in accordance with the deathday of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
