February 11, 1889 – ◆"Banzai" is established in the promulgation of the Meiji Constitution.
It is established when university students shout banzai in front of the emperor's carriage.
Traditionally, "banzai" (roughly translated as "hurrah or three cheers") was an expression of enthuasiasm, and crowds shouting the word three times, arms stretched out above their heads, could be considered the traditional Japanese form of applause. The date of the implementation (January 12, 1989 in the Japanese calendar) marked the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Meiji constitution of Japan (January 12, 1889 in the Japanese calendar). But the story didn't stop there.
